I felt like I was trapped in a darkness so thick it blinded and suffocated me all at once.Worst of all was the feeling that who I was as a person was completely destroyed.It was the first time in my life I felt truly weak, as if the very essence of my being was being snuffed out, and I had no words, no language for what was happening to me. I felt like there was no hope...It wasn't that I had never heard of coercive control—I was familiar with the term.The problem was that every time it was spoken about, it was in the context of intimate partner relationships, and I never saw myself in the victims portrayed. I knew grooming existed, but even there, it always seemed tied to youth or adult romance scams. And while I sympathized with those victims, I could not identify with them either.I was completely blindsided by the reality of coercive control operating outside of romantic partnerships—and because I didn't recognize it, I was absolutely defenseless against it.
